Balance your life !!

As life partner Husband and Wife should shoulder each other’s responsibilities. Equal partnership fosters closeness between husband and wife .There was a time where husband was primary wage-earner  in a family and wife was merely the Homemaker. They were brought up this way by their family right from the time they were small.

source

As time passed, many hurdles came up in the way of earning such as increase in cost of living due to increase in population, Invention of machines replacing man power and many more. When things started appearing really difficult, the women in the house stepped up to share the load and started making a living by making money in their possible ways and thereby started becoming a secondary income earner.

source

Now although the women started sharing the family responsibilities by earning and contributing as a secondary income earner, she always continued the primary role of being the Homemaker. She performed tow roles and hence slowly the balance of life began to disturb. She worked for same time as Husband by being the secondary income earner and also she did chores of homemaker like cooking, cleaning and laundry work. As per a survey conducted, 85% of working Indian women feel they have two jobs, one at work and another at home.

Now while the women started contributing by being the secondary income earner, the role of the husband to contribute in household chores did not happen. Not only then but sadly this is the scenario even in today's times. 76% Men thing that laundry is women’s job and even if they help it seems as favour not responsibility.

source

It is sad to see such inequalities still continue to exist. 2/3rd's of Indian women feel, there exists inequality at home, between men and women. 73% of married Indian women feel, a man prioritizes relaxing over helping with household chores. These are mainly due to issues in mindset and mostly related to their upbringing by society.
1. While raising boys itself, they must be educated in doing household chores and not just on getting a job.
2.  Men feel it embarrassing and feel their male ego hurt by doing Women’s job like laundry, cooking. But if women can go ahead and generate income, men should also change their attitude and begin to contribute in household chores and not go by society.
3.  Women should encourage men who try to help them in household work and not find any fault in their work.   They should take it as a blessing and it would be helpful in the long run if all men share load with their wives.

Five Friday Favorites - 16Jan

This has been a wonderful week so far and I have plans for great weekend! I and hubby will be going to watch a movie with friends and party this Saturday. It is funny but it has been a long time since i went to watch a movie at the theater. So i am looking forward to spend a good time with some of my favorite people.

Let me get into my 5 favorite things this week!

1) Quote :

source

This was the perfect quote for me this week. Last Sunday, I just did not feel like going for my run. I had to run solo that day. Added to it, it was so very cold that it was more difficult to change from PJ's. At that point of time all i needed was a push and motivation. I just forced myself outside and after a tough start had the best run ever.

2) Workout:

source

I am still following the TIU workout challenge and stuck to the schedule for 3 weeks.  I am beginning to see small changes in my body. My energy levels are up and can sense some inches being down. Really excited about it and feeling proud of myself to have consistently followed it.

3) Food :

source

Last weekend I was making omelette for breakfast and got the idea to add some vegetables to it and make it look interesting :)
I added some onions, garlic, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms to the omelette, The final result was a colorful and interesting looking omelette. It turned out to be really yummy.

4) Movie :

source
On Sunday, hubby and I happened to watch the movie - Moon-rise Kingdom. We had not watched this movie earlier. It turned out to be an romantic drama movie and we loved watching young lovers together.

5) Best Moment :

source

OMG. This has to be the best moment in this week. Yesterday I had to give a speech at my place. It was all over my mind yesterday and I was really nervous about this . Guess what - I won the Best Speaker award !!! I was so happy. I had won a best speaker award last week too. This is the second time i am getting the best speaker award for two weeks in a row. This was so unexpected and definitely a good confidence booster for the year !!

Travelling locally, nationally and globally !!

Tomorrow I have to give a speech at my workplace on Travelling. So i spent some time preparing for it this week. This was all on my mind this week. Below is my speech on Travelling -

source

“The world is a book, and those who don't travel only read one page.”

I will be giving my second speech today and title is travelling locally, nationally and globally.

Do you have a passion? What is it that you day dream about when you think about living a life that you desire?

source

One of my passions in life is travelling. I absolutely love travelling. I love excitement, adventure and variety that i get from travelling. It makes me more aware of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures than if i just stayed in the same place doing the same routine. Travelling can be accomplished in a variety of different levels including locally, nationally and globally.

I would like to share with you how i have included travelling in my life at each of these different levels.

There was a time when i think i did not travel very well due to college studies and busy classes and a small budget.  With my passion for travelling i discovered ways in which i can satisfy this need by going to different local places that i have not visited before. I took advantage of days when my relatives visited us and went with them to museum, gardens, aquarium, zoo, orcehestras, special restaurants, mall, historical monuments. There is always many many places that you can visit locally when you just look around.

There are also some places like local resorts which offer discounted rates during offseasons. I also took advantage of such offers and deals to such places so that i could fit it into my budget and could visit places at discounted rates. It was a great way to satisfy need to travel when it was not easy for me to go on long trip.

source

Gradually I was able to take more trips across the country. National trips can take on a variety of themes. One of the theme could be places of national significance. eg Delhi. National trip could also be to go see a place of natural wonder eg: Himalayas or thar deserts. A national trip could also be for educational purposes maybe visiting different colleges or travelling for training for a particular job that you would be taking on. Travelling could also be for excitement eg: Amusement parks like Essel world or water kingdom. Travelling across the country could also be for simple relaxation at a resort. Whatever is the theme of national travelling i like them all.

source

International travel is an opportunity for an incredible learning experience. Global trips add an extra element of exotic excitement with different cultures, languages and food. I think that knowing the language of another country really adds to the full expierience.
International travel can be done for cheap if planned correctly. Taking advantage of foreign exchange rates allows travelers to extend their vacations and have experiences that would not be affordable at home.Trips to other countries can also have different themes the main reason people think of is for pleasure as in sightseeing maybe with a tourist group. Another reason for trip maybe a job offer for a period of time in another country.Another reason maybe that a  person could go to see friends and relatives and stay for a period of time. Personally i found the best way to visit another country is to have another person that you already know who lives there, who you can stay with and who can show you around. It really helps when you are in another country to have somebody there.
It would be great to visit a country and meet your friends who live there.

In conclusion i hope that i have given you a glimpse of how travelling has enhanced my life and i would like to challenge you that if you do not travel too much you could atleast take some time to checkout local places in your area and see how travelling in that way can enhance your life too.

A Foe Turned Friend

"Ellora keep quiet. I will tell your name to teacher", Soum said. This would be a regular thing happening in school whenever our teacher would ask class monitor Soum to make sure no one is talking. Soum was my overweight, strict and studious classmate who would abide by our teacher's words very seriously. Ellora on the other hand was my best friend who was a totally jolly person. She could keep talking without stopping and so would get caught everytime the teacher asked Soum to monitor the class. For that she would be given some punishment or scolding by our teacher. Due to this Ellora hated Soum so much and considered him her biggest enemy.

source

2 Years later, we three of us again happened to be in the same college along with few others. We had our own group of friends ad we never included Soum. Time few by and we all went to different colleges for engineering. We were in regular contact through social media and we made sure to meet occasionally. Overtime, we lost contact of few of our friends and obviously with Soum too.

One fine day in month of Oct, we got a news that we would be having our school reunion in Dec. We got excited since it was more than 5 years that we had met our classmates.

Finally, the D-Day came. It was surprising to see our classmates as they came. We were very eager to meet our classmates with whom we had lost contact. One by one as they came in the entire atmosphere turned into a rocking place. Then came Soum. He had actually changed so much. He had lost weight, built on some muscles and looked good too. He came to us and spoke and this was i guess after a long time that we actually spoke to him. He turned out to be jovial person. Finally, we ended exchanging our contact details and started being in regular contact.

source
As time flew by, we got into our first jobs. Surprisingly Ellora and Soum got placed in the same company Wipro at same location Hyderabad. As this was a new city and they knew no one there, they both got along really well together. One fine day, i get the surprise of my life when Ellora calls me to tell that she and Soum are in a relationship. I could not believe this and totally surprised. Eventually they got married and two years later were blessed with a daughter Jia.

Yesterday was Jia's first birthday party. We all met after long and had a good time together.I still cannot believe that two people who were once implacable foes in school, have become good friends later and are now a couple !!

It turned out to be really yummy.

4) Movie :

5) Best Moment :

Yesterday I had to deliver my project 4 from Competent Communicator Manual in my Toastmasters club. I was really nervous about this as it has you speaking in front of 30+ folks. Although I always prepare for my speech, the thought of speaking in front of a huge audience always freaks me out. So this time too i prepared well for my speech and gave my best. Guess what - I won the Best Speaker award !!! I was so happy. This was so unexpected and definitely a good kick-start for the year !!

2015 Goals !!

We are already 8 days into 2015...whoa...days are flying so fast !!

2014 was CHALLENGING - TRANSITIONAL - BLESSED for me and my family in s many ways. I got to experiment with many new opportunities and also had moments of struggle, but overall 2014 was a good learning year. I have high hopes for this year and some goals to conquer. Since I have been thinking about all this week, i thought what better way than to document them on my blog which will help me try to stay a little more accountable!

1. Wake up early - Err...this also means going to sleep early. I always tell myself that i need to go to bed by 11 but would get stuck doing things and and end up finally at 1 a.m. This makes me leaving so exhausted because I got to sleep so late.

source
2. Stick to exercising daily - With over a year of consistent walking, it is time that i focused more on toning workouts. So what better than to participate in the Tone it up Love your body series starting this January. My goal is to stick to this challenge for 6 weeks. After that, my goal is to workout minimum 5 days a week consistently and track progress.

3. Learn to calm down and stay focused and controlled - I tend to get emotional very often sometimes even though its not required at all. This makes me waste time and energy and get diverted rather than concentrate on my goals. So starting this week, one of my goals is to stay focused on my goals and exert better control over my emotions.

4. Try cooking new foods at home - Lately looking at my meal planning, I realized that i tend to cook the same food over and over without experimenting or trying new foods at home. This tends to get boring and we end up at the restaurants during the weekends. So this year, i target to cook minimum 2 new food at home every month.

5. Drink more water - I really suck at this. I just tend to forget drinking water !!! Can you believe that???
My goal this year is to have a water bottle filled at my desk so that it stays right in front of me and i am reminded to drink water. I target to drink 2 Liters of water  everyday.

source

6. Read more books - This is something that i need to get back on. I definitely need to get serious on this  goal and target to read minimum 2 books every month. This would help me grow and also help me gain confidence and participate in more toastmaster meetings.

7. Blogging - Last year i was blogging mostly my workouts and a bit on my travel here and there. But this year I want to get more active with my blog and continue to educate myself more about blogging. My goal is to have 5 posts per week till June.

8. Travels - I am so thankful that we both love to travel. Even on our smaller trips, I want to take more photos and document it here on the blog so that I can cherish those moments for years to come!

9. Get more organized - I tend to get laid back on weekends spend more time on Facebook rather than organizing things and preparing for the week. What has been following is a week of chaos trying to search and find things and getting things done at last minute. This year i want to spend time on weekends organizing things for the week and also clean the house so that it stays intact.

source
10. Unplug at least one time a week: One reason i go to bed late is due to my computer. I will be aimlessly scrolling through Facebook checking what others are upto before I go to bed and I end up exhausted . This is something i want to replace with a good habit this year and at least once a week I want to unplug and stay disconnected from Facebook !!

Never Give Up !!!

"I am going to Los Angeles. I cannot believe this", my friend Archana called me at 8am in the morning to say this. "Are you dreaming?", I asked back. "No babes. I just checked the email from my manager and he wants me to travel in January. I am so happy since then that i am just calling everyone to say this".

source

I could feel the excitement in her voice. She had always wanted to go to US. It was like her childhood dream. She worked really hard to make her dream come true. I know Archana since college days. Once she had set a goal, she would do everything to get it done. But going to US was something which was not in her control. She came from a middle class home where her parents worked hard to meet ends. I still remember the day Archana would wear same jeans for college the entire week as her family could not afford expensive dresses. I think it was after a really long time that we had seen her get another new jeans. Today she along with her 2 sisters got good education and are earning independently.

I remember the days in college when she would tell me that her cousins went to US for further studies. But she could not do that as her family could not afford to send her to US for her further studies. It was always in her mind to go to US. Once into work, she still had her goal in mind and worked day and night at her job so that at-least this way she could fulfill her dream of going to the US. Finally that day her hard work was recognized and her travel was approved for 1 year.

source

I was so happy for her. I went to meet her that day and tears came in my eyes as I saw my friend. She was a real epitome of determination and commitment. Never give up on your dreams is something i learnt from her that day. Here is wishing you all the best sweetie as you start a new journey in life ahead !!

New Year - New beginning !!

You have the ability to transform your life--- the only thing standing in the way of YOU and your dreams is YOU! Every single day you have a chance to redesign your destiny! It takes discipline, but it pays dividends!

When you stop placing your HAPPINESS in the hands of:
- a scale
- a person's reaction
- facebook
- a business (and what it was doing or not doing)
- a mirror
- a man
- a woman
- someone's approval
- my home
- a bank account balance
- the traffic
- even if I got a good parking spot

And took complete ownership of my feelings, my gratitude, and my path... THAT is when it starts as a new beginning and turns dreams to reality.
Friends, 2015 has the ability to be EVERYTHING YOU WANT IT TO BE.
But it'll only be that way if you're intentional and focused.
If you focus on progress, not perfection.
If you focus on blessing, not problems.
If you focus on ownership, not blame.
If you take responsibility, not live as a victim.
You need to get uncomfortable!

The end of ONE thing is ALWAYS an opportunity to begin ANOTHER adventure!

As you go into 2015 --- Think about a stress in YOUR life and challenge yourself to OVERCOME by way of learning more & doing something about it! AVOIDING your stress only make them seem EVER BIGGER and more scary than they actually are! Once you FACE THEM head on the POWER will be in YOUR court!

BRING ON THE NEW BEGINNINGS BABY!!!

If I could sum up 2014 in 3 words , it would be: CHALLENGING - TRANSITIONAL - BLESSED!

Cheers to the endless possibilities of 2015 and the accomplishments, the obstacles overcame and the days lived!!!!

Wishing everyone a rocking 2015 !!!

Everything happens for a reason !!

"There is a new project requirement which requires you to travel for 6 months to Singapore. We are yet to receive the final dates for your travel and will update you soon." informed our project manager in one of our meetings to Vishu. We all knew the best bet for this travel would be Vishu. You see, he was the most hard working and senior most in our team. He would work late nights and we have never seen him telling no to anyone. At the same time we all knew that he worked crazy hard because he always wanted an onsite opportunity. So we were really excited and happy for him.
For the first time we noticed that excitement in Vishu. He was looking extremely happy about this. When we went to congratulate him for this opportunity, he told us that at the start of this year, he had promised his parents that he would make a visit to the Sabarimala in December to make this dream come true. Now this news was told to us in the month of December and by then Vishu had started his preparation for the Sabarimala pilgrimage. He had to fast for 41 days and not shave till the completion of pilgrimage. He wore a traditional black dress to work.
On Monday, our manager told Vishu that the vice president wanted to have a meeting with him that day. It was a meeting through web camera where he got to see and speak with the vice president at the client side. The meeting went off for about 30 minutes where they explained him the expectations and requirements for his travel. Overall he felt that the meeting went good and he was mentally all set to travel Singapore. Later his manager asked him about the meeting and he gave the same feedback. He also told that he would be informed about his travel date soon.
About 3 weeks went by after this conversation happened and there was no news about his travel dates. When inquired with his manager, they broke a news that the client gave a negative feedback about his appearance and felt he would not be suitable for this role. So they had cancelled his travel only for the reason because of his appearance. Vishu was totally upset about this and felt very disappointed that he was so close to fulfilling his dream and had lost a golden opportunity. When we heard about this, we were all shocked. We told him everything happens for the good and consoled him to complete the pilgrimage and try for next client opportunity.
Once back from his pilgrimage, Vishu took all the efforts and worked extra hard to not miss the next onsite travel. His hard work and devotion payed off. In the next onsite travel, he was chosen from our team to travel to Los Angeles for 1 year. This then got further extended and he is now travelling next month to India for a holiday. We are so excited to meet him and the power of first impression always comes to our mind whenever we think of his story.

Happy Anniversary Sir !!

"Class, today we are going to run 10KM without stopping. Those who stop will be made to run an additional 500 metres" yelled our sports sir. He was so passionate about sports that he would go running on every weekend. We also got to hear that he also went to a local gym in the evening and led a very healthy lifestyle.

He was an introvert by nature who had very few friends. He would always be seen with a serious face. I think one can count the number of times he must have smiled or laughed in our class.

He led a very disciplined life. He had a fit body, very good height, dusky complexion and tip-top dressing. But one thing that he sported always was a mustache and stubble. This somehow did not go well with his appearance and he looked cruel with his stubble.

Naturally with his behavior and appearance he failed to impress his lady-love, our Maths teacher. It was rumored that he had proposed to her once and she had rejected him. She was beautiful, gentle and kind which was a total contrast to his behavior.  She was a very friendly person by nature and would engage in jovial conversations with us. During one such conversation, she too mentioned how much she hates men sporting mustache and stubble. This was probably the turning point of the entire story.

The next day we were all shocked to see our sir. He had somehow overheard this conversation and took her words so seriously that he Gillette-shaved his mustache and stubble that he had since god knows. He looked much different now. But definitely had a pleasant appearance. When asked the reason for this change he simply smiled and told that someone had commented over his stubble which hurt him badly. So he wanted to try a new look. In the days that went, not only did he change his appearance but his behavior also changed. He made a lot of friends and became good friends with maths teacher.

The next year we got the news of their engagement. We were very happy to hear this. In our next class, he personally invited all of us to their wedding. All of us were excited for them and could not help but think what change can shaving off a stubble do. If he had not come across that conversation about our teacher hating men with stubble, he would have continued being as he was. He would have never led a joyful life and got his lady love.Today marks their tenth wedding anniversary and over the years we still remember his story.
